James Warring

CEO and Founder

James Warring

James Warring has built a decades-long career in the tax and financial advisory fields through discipline, technical precision, and a steady commitment to leadership. He was raised in Montgomery County, Maryland, where education and responsibility were emphasized from an early age. He completed high school in 1979 and later continued his education at a university in Baltimore. These formative years shaped his interest in accounting, finance, and structured decision-making, laying the groundwork for a professional life focused on long-term planning and consistent client service.

Laying the Foundation

He completed his undergraduate studies in accounting and finance in 1983. Entering the profession during this period required adaptability, as regulatory standards and fiduciary expectations were evolving rapidly. From the beginning of his career, he focused on understanding technical rules while also learning how those rules applied in real client situations. This balance between theory and application helped him develop accuracy, reliability, and sound professional judgment early on.

During the mid-1980s, James achieved several important professional milestones. He earned the Certified Public Accountant designation in 1984 and later obtained the Certified Financial Planner designation in 1986. These accomplishments reflected disciplined preparation and a clear commitment to professional growth. He continued strengthening his qualifications by earning the Personal Financial Specialist designation in 1990, further expanding his ability to integrate accounting services with broader financial planning responsibilities.

These professional credentials played a significant role in shaping his career direction. Over time, he worked at seven accounting firms throughout the metropolitan Washington, DC area. Each position exposed him to different client structures, compliance environments, and operational approaches. This wide range of experience allowed him to observe how professional organizations function under varying regulatory and business conditions. These years were especially formative, helping him refine his judgment, adaptability, and understanding of firm operations while preparing him for leadership roles.

From Practitioner to Owner

After completing a 12-year partnership at an accounting firm in Bethesda, Maryland, Warring entered a new phase of his career in 2007. At that point, he launched two separate businesses, one operating as a registered investment advisory firm and the other as a public accounting practice. This transition marked a shift from practitioner to owner, expanding his responsibilities to include governance, regulatory oversight, and long-term organizational strategy.

From the outset, he deliberately decided to operate the two businesses as separate organizations. This structure ensured clarity in governance, regulatory alignment, and service specialization. At the same time, both organizations shared coordinated leadership and a common professional culture. This approach reflected his belief that clear boundaries and structured oversight are essential for ethical practice and long-term stability.

Rather than pursuing rapid consolidation or aggressive expansion, he chose a growth strategy focused on steady, consistent progress. Over the next 15 years, this approach proved effective. Both organizations expanded nearly tenfold during this period. What began as a four-person operation grew to more than forty employees by the time the businesses were sold in September 2025. This growth occurred gradually, allowing internal systems, staff development, and client relationships to mature without unnecessary disruption.

James attributed much of this success to strategic integration. In the later years of ownership, five practices joined the platform, including four accounting practices and one third-party administrator practice. Each integration was approached carefully, with close attention to operational depth and client continuity. These additions strengthened internal capabilities while preserving service standards and organizational stability. More importantly, they reflected a leadership style focused on long-term consistency rather than short-term expansion.

Leadership Beyond the Firm

His professional engagement extended beyond his own organizations. He assumed leadership roles within several national and regional professional groups, contributing experience and perspective to broader industry initiatives. He served as a past leader of a regional estate planning organization and as an advisory board member of a hospital-based planned giving committee in Maryland.

In addition, he served on the executive committee of the personal financial planning section of a national professional organization. In this role, he shared insight shaped by decades of advisory work, compliance experience, and organizational leadership. His involvement reflected a commitment to professional standards, collaboration, and responsible practice across the field.

His leadership efforts were formally recognized in 2020 when James received a Smart CEO award for organizational leadership and business performance. This recognition came during a period of industry disruption and shifting client expectations. The award reflected his ability to guide organizations steadily through change while maintaining focus on long-term objectives and ethical practice.

A Lifelong Passion for Golf

Athletics has been an enduring part of his life. During high school, he was ranked third in Maryland for golf, demonstrating early dedication and competitive focus. He continued to play at a competitive level while attending university, balancing academic responsibilities with athletic commitment.

Golf remained an active pursuit throughout his adult life. He was a long-term member at a private country club for more than 28 years, where he regularly participated in competitive events. In 2022, he won the Tuffy Leeman Championship in a two-person event with his playing partner. This achievement reflected years of preparation, steady practice, and consistent focus.

After relocating to Florida, James Warring continued to compete at a high level. While playing at another private country club, he won the 2024 Bubba Invitational Match Play title. These accomplishments reflected the same qualities that supported his professional success, including patience, preparation, and the ability to perform under pressure.

The Next Chapter

His personal values are closely connected to his leadership style and community involvement. He and his family are active participants in a church in Clearwater Beach, Florida, contributing through regular giving and ongoing engagement. Faith-based stewardship plays a vital role in how he approaches responsibility, planning, and service.

These values influenced how his organizations were structured and managed. Stability, ethical clarity, and long-term continuity were priorities for employees and clients alike. When the time came to sell his business interests to a New York-based money management firm, his focus was on alignment rather than profit alone. Ensuring continuity and shared principles guided that decision.

Across more than four decades of professional work, James Warring consistently emphasized steady advancement over rapid change. As he moves beyond business ownership, he views this stage not as an ending, but as a continuation of a life shaped by measured growth, responsibility, and contribution. He remains grounded in the same principles that defined his career from the very beginning.
